Gas Glass Flasks and Metal Cylinder Canisters

Neon tubes and artistic plasma creations rely on a variety of gases to produce their distinctive colors and glowing effects. Although people often refer to all glowing discharge tubes as “neon lights,” pure neon gas actually produces only a bright reddish-orange glow. When a high voltage is applied across electrodes at each end of a sealed glass tube, the gas becomes ionized, creating a plasma. As electrons collide with gas atoms, they excite those atoms to higher energy states. When the atoms return to their normal energy levels, they release light at characteristic wavelengths, producing the familiar luminous colors.

Different gases and gas mixtures are used to create a broad palette of colors. Argon is one of the most common alternatives to neon and typically emits a pale lavender-blue light. When combined with a small amount of mercury vapor, argon can generate a bright blue glow and can also excite fluorescent coatings inside the tube to produce greens, yellows, whites, and other colors. Helium produces a soft pink or peach-colored light, while krypton creates a pale whitish glow and is often used in specialty lighting. Xenon emits a blue-violet light and is valued in certain artistic and scientific plasma displays. Modern plasma sculptures and decorative plasma globes may use similar noble gases or gas mixtures at low pressures, allowing electrical discharges to form dynamic filaments, arcs, and branching patterns that respond to electromagnetic fields and touch. The combination of gas selection, pressure, tube geometry, and electrical input gives artists and designers remarkable control over the appearance and behavior of these glowing plasma creations.

  • Smaller Gas Volume.
  • Less cost when time to replace.
  • Considered "excellent" gas purity in "glass" vessel.
  • Lower Gas pressure.
  • Ideal for smaller shop production volumes.
  • Less chance of a leak.
  • Most older pumping plants are already set up for glass flasks.
  • Lower cost flasks makes it easier to stock all the different gases.
  • Largest Gas Volume.
  • More expensive when time to replace.
  • Less gas purity with metal vessel.
  • Highest gas pressure.
  • Best for largest production shops.
  • More chances of a leak with numerous fittings.
  • Very expensive to convert a pumping system from glass flasks to metal canisters.
  • Higher canister costs may prohibit using various gases like Krypton and Xenon.

Gas Canister Cylinder Adapters

Is a Cylinder Canister Adapter Required?

If you are already using a gas cylinder canister on your pumping plant, than more than likely you do not need to purchase an adapter. If you are converting your pumping plant to from using the glass flasks to the gas cylinder canisters, then you will most likely need an adapter/s.

Our gas cylinders are equipped with a standard C10 gas fitting, the industry-standard connection used on portable calibration gas cylinders and other specialty gas cylinders. While this standardized fitting ensures compatibility with a wide range of gas handling equipment, the cylinder is not designed to dispense gas directly.

Because the gas is stored at pressures exceeding 300 psi, a compatible cylinder adapter or valve is required to safely connect to the C10 fitting, regulate the gas flow, and provide controlled delivery to your application. Without the appropriate adapter, the cylinder cannot be safely or effectively used.

Using the correct adapter ensures a secure, leak-free connection while allowing precise gas flow control and safe operation.

GAS-CYLINDER-ADAPTER.jpg

Gas Canister Cylinder
7/16 NS Metering Valve Adapter

This Gas Cylinder Adapter consists of a female 7/16 NS thread with a pin that depresses through the gas cylinder when the knob on the fitting is rotated in a counter clockwise direction, thus allowing inert gas to flow to a metering valve. There are 2 1/8” NPT female threads on the aluminum fitting. Typically one is for a pressure gauge and the other threads on to the metering valve. The aluminum gas cylinder cannot be used alone to meter gas into the tube. An additional valve that can handle a pressure of greater than 300psi must be used.

How to install a neon gas flask to fill neon tubes.
HOW TO INSTALL A GLASS FLASK

1. Purchase a "new" 1/4 - 20 steel bolt that is 3" long.

2. Cut the head off, then clean thoroughly with alcohol.

3. Carefully and gently slide the clean bolt into the stem of the flask.

4. Connect the flask to the pumping system.

5. With the stopcock open - pull a vacuum overnight.

6. The next morning, close the stopcock.

7. Check for leaks.

8. Using a magnet, bump the bolt into the tipoff to open the flask to the system.
